The fact that Black women die at childbirth at three times the rate as white women is terrifying and unacceptable. Unfortunately, another effect of systematic and institutionalized racism is the Black maternal health crisis. But this idea came to me after witnessing all that was going on with our country after George Floyd - and obviously police brutality and racial injustice are things that have been going on long before that incident. I often joked that being on the farm, if I didn’t announce it, no one would have known I was having a baby until I popped up with a newborn one day in L.A. Thank you! Well, firstly I generally don’t do things like that because I’m pretty private when it comes to my family. From your perspective as a mother, why is this such a significant and important cause? Recently, Kelis spoke to Shondaland about balancing music and motherhood, the relaunch of Bounty & Full, and how to embrace your uniqueness amid a world that clings to classifications. “It’s just this is a time when it can be on autopilot and I’m able to explore and do other things. Music is always part of my life,” Kelis tells Shondaland. She’s still working on music and plans to release an album next year. Though Kelis has shifted gears by decamping to her farm and entering the world of gastronomy, her longtime fans can relax. All while preparing to tour in 2021 and welcome her third child - that’s that's right, Kelis is about to have a table for five!

Later this fall, Kelis has plans to rerelease her cookbook, My Life on a Plate, alongside relaunching Bounty & Full with an array of delicious sauces and bbq rubs. The greatest artists in the world were great because they spoke to an era, even if they were before their time, there was something that people could latch onto and they could recognize.
